Along with floral and tropical prints, linen is yet another summer staple that we've all come to love. Or at least I do. I mean, I haven't always liked linen. In fact I hated anything linen before, especially shirts. But over time I've come to terms with all the unavoidable wrinkles and creases that come with wearing a linen piece. I've also come to appreciate how light and breathable the fabric is.
Because of its association with summer, oftentimes linen shirts are regarded as resort or beachwear. But they're just as perfect an item you'd wear in the city and in my case here, the office. The shirt's peach color here goes well with the brown pants and of course, the pink ombre boots.
So how are you handling the summer heat?
Shirt (Uniqlo); pants (Bench); boots (from Linea Italia); bracelet (Paragon Manila).

Cliché as it is, tropical prints are so summer that they're meant for the beach. In fact it's a shame that it's only now that I've worn this shirt to one. Buttoned shirts have always been city wear for me, like this time when I paired this tropical print shirt with white pants while strolling around The Henry Hotel Manila and felt like a haciendero.
I even wore it to the office with light blue seersucker-like pants for an all-blue ensemble. From afar it looks just white or a very light blue but up close you'll see the fine stripes, which makes it safe to pair with a loud printed top. Come to think of it, save for the shoes, it's the exact same pairing I'm sporting on the beach right here. But office or beach, what's the difference?

Part of the so-called "full tour" of the Bojo River cruise, The Farmhouse in Aloguinsan is a small-scale organic farm where we were served our snacks. Its couple of hundred square-meter area is mainly devoted to growing vegetables, a few livestock, and some fish.

When going on trips to the beach or any place that involves swimming, I often reach for tank tops and t-shirts to go with my swim shorts. On our recent trip to Cebu, however, I made a conscious effort to also try buttoned shirts.
So here I was sporting a long-sleeved shirt--sleeves rolled up--while enjoying the Kawasan Falls. It's a blue on blue swimwear ensemble: light-hued top and dark-colored shorts, plain vs printed. And oh, even the sandals I was wearing were blue! Hmm...the dry bag, too.

Even with overcast skies, the Bojo River's beautiful hues shine through.
Ever since Kwittiegirl showed me photos of Aloguinsan from her trip there nearly three years ago, I've always wanted to visit this sleepy little town in Southern Cebu. Time may have passed but I'm glad that I was finally able to earlier this month.
We stayed at Lunhaw Farm Resort and planned on taking it easy while checking out what this town had to offer. The Bojo River Cruise, of course, was on top of our list.

Wearing prints with a different set of prints can be tricky, which is why it's best to pair them with something in a plain and solid color. But then what's left to enjoy of summer when the majority of beach and swimwear come in prints of all colors and patterns?
For one, you can choose a bright-colored top with printed swim shorts so both pieces stand out without clashing. Go for neon if you may. Conversely, if your top is quite busy, tone it down with something solid but in a color that still stands out, like I did before with an Aztec print tank top and plain green swim shorts.

The entrance to the resort's lobby and common area. The napping dog is Oniol (or Onyol; I don't know how it's spelled).
Aloguinsan may not ring a bell to most people but this sleepy town in Southern Cebu is slowly but steadily building up its reputation as a prime eco-tourism site, thanks to its popular Bojo River Cruise. We spent a good two nights there and stayed at this lovely place called Lunhaw Farm Resort. Here's a rundown of our experience there.

They may not be groundbreaking to Miranda Priestly but there's nothing that says spring/summer like florals. So on a recent trip where I spent an afternoon in the church complex of Boljoon in Southern Cebu, I donned an old floral short-sleeved shirt.

Cargo pants and cargo shorts are often frowned upon in the fashion world. I don't exactly know why but I'm guessing it's the usually lousy fit that fashion overlords find unappealing. Or it could be that because it has so many pockets, the wearer is wont on stuffing all sorts of stuff into them, resulting in unsightly bulges everywhere.
But I can't fault cargo lovers out there because these clothing pieces are so utilitarian and comfy. I, for one, wear cargo pants and shorts from time to time. It's been probably years, though, since I last wore one, then I found these cargo shorts on sale at Uniqlo and thought, hey, why not?

I'm mostly a casual dresser, even at work. But I also like to wear a suit at times, though I always have to dress it down considering how casual our work environment is. I know it would be nice to go on full dandy and all but I guess I don't have the guts to do it consistently and not mind what everyone else around me is wearing.
Anyway, here I am in another dressed-down army green suit.

I don't think anyone would hate t-shirts. Be it a graphic print tee, a biker/rocker tee, a classic anime like Voltes V tee, or a cutesy character tee, there will always be a tee for everybody. Its print or design may have a lot to do with a t-shirt's appeal to someone, especially since simply pairing it with jeans, joggers, or shorts already makes for an outfit in the most convenient way possible.
But there's also a lot to be said of its plain counterparts. Because there are no distracting or clashing prints whatsoever, a simple plain t-shirt offers the wearer a canvas on which to build a whole look. Of course it looks just as fine with jeans, joggers, or shorts, but it most certainly looks way better with more formal trousers than any printed tee would. A plain tee is simply more versatile.

Okay, so I'm wearing my flower lapel pin too high here. My cluelessness is apparent. But anyway, let's talk cropped pants, which I really like. Slim silhouettes look good, no doubt, but roomier cuts prove to be just as great with the right cut.

Alas, not all expensive fragrances are good and not all cheap scents are bad! A fragrance's price point isn't always commensurate to quality, and I've had my share of disappointments with some pricier ones from well-known brands. But I try all sorts of stuff and am occasionally surprised to find some gems among the inexpensive lot.
Take, for instance, Dear John from Lush, the cosmetic company I've always associated with soaps. Consistent with all things Lush, this cologne is packaged quite simplistically. But don't judge it from the bottle alone because Dear John is a wonderful scent.

To drive all the way to Quezon City from Makati is a big deal for me, let alone to try out a restaurant there. But sometime during the Christmas holidays, I purposely did just that.
Tucked away in a nice, quiet spot of Scout Lozano, LōLa Cafe+Bar isn't anything new. It's been around for several years now, an old house that's been converted into a restaurant. I know it's been quite a while since trying it but I felt I still had to write about it, so here goes.

It's usually all bright colors, florals, and tropical prints we see as the summer heat marches in. It's a good thing, no question, because they all look good under the sun. But whites, pastels and other pale shades also offer another option for keeping ourselves fresh-looking amid the heat. This white polo shirt with pastel blue accents I'm wearing is but one example.

Yes, I know it's horrible: I deliberately went for a matchy-matchy getup. I know how overly color-coordinated outfits are often frowned upon but I went with it anyway. Whether I realized it too late or I was really aware of it from the start doesn't matter because I was matchy-matchy in cobalt blue.
Blame it on the shoes.

I recently chanced upon Kitchen 1B in Makati's Legazpi Village, which, apparently has been in existence for more than two years now. Part of the Apartment 1B chain of restaurants, this one appeals to the health-conscious lot with organic and supposedly healthier dishes.

Ah, bathroom selfies. I know how these people today are often scorned for their vainglory but to each his own. Besides, I've been doing bathroom selfies long before smartphones came to be, back when camera phone resolutions weren't even a megapixel.
I went into the restroom and there's no one else there. I see myself in the mirror, all alone against the white tiled walls, perfect contrast... and I thought, how about doing one now?

Just wearing my signature lazy outfit here of pullover and pants. Inherently casual, especially how the pants are cuffed, I put on my usual spin of throwing a jacket over to dress things up a bit. In this case it's an asymmetrical blazer that's longer in the front. It's kind of like my coattails are in front.
The last time I wore this blazer I used a necklace in place of a pocket square. This time, though, I sticked to, well, a good o'l pocket square.

You may or may not have heard of Makansutra Hawkers in SM Megamall. The fact that I found myself there is quite unusual, what with me considering every other place outside Makati "out of town." It's essentially a food court but one that's dedicated to a host of different Asian street food. Makansutra may oft be mistaken for Singaporean food because it's based in Singapore but it's not as it also has stalls featuring dishes from Hong Kong, Malacca, and more.
The food court itself sports a lively design with walls of bare concrete, sections of flooring from scrap wood (or at least they make it appear that way), sheets of corrugated plastic for ceiling, and a variety of designs for seating, made from a mix of metal tubing, iron drums, wood, and what-have-you. It sure has a hip vibe going on.

After a relatively short - but sweet - period of light chill, the mercury is rising once more. And so it's back to lightweight stuff that's appropriate for the tropics. I'm still wearing pullovers, though, like this one here, but it's the kind that's just enough to keep me warm while inside the office.

On a whim I decided I'd wear a blazer and matching shorts to Art Fair Philippines last Sunday. It's no suit but there's something to it because the fabric of both blazer and shorts - which I bought separately (years apart in fact) - are an exact match, which is a textured meld of powder blue and white. I also have matching pants, which, when worn with the blazer, made me look like I was attending a summer wedding.

I'm really loving the weather these past days. Though I know this is probably what summer feels like in some countries but to us third-world, tropical country dwellers, this is "winter!" Especially in the office.
So it's time to bring the sweaters out!

I love long cardigans, even if I don't really own a lot of them. There's something about them that affords the wearer some instant swagger. Think of how it flutters gloriously as it catches the wind while you saunter your way through the streets or the halls of your office. Pure swag! Or at least that's what I think.
I've found myself channeling The Dark Knight with a long cardigan before and on another occasion, a wizard (of the Harry Potter mold). So when I chanced upon an even longer cardi, I knew I just had to get it.

If you're looking for a nice Valentine dinner with your special someone but don't want to break the bank, might I suggest the Manila Pavilion Hotel for you? I mean, it's not dirt-cheap but it's very reasonable if you want to impress.
With The Taste of Romance: A Valentine's Dinner Buffet at Seasons Restaurant, you and your partner are sure to get your fill of good food (including this month's featured offer, Tri-Color Ravioli stuffed with truffle cream cheese and quail eggs), with live entertainment from Willy and Maely Ann San Juan--all in a classy hotel setting. Ladies also get a sweet gift and a glass of sparkling wine to cap off the evening. All these for only Php 1,200 nett.

A suit it technically is not but yes, the blazer and pants are a perfect match. Like that time when I looked like I was attending a summer wedding when in fact I was actually at work--I mean, seriously, it looked like the perfect summer wedding outfit--I got the blazer first and just chanced upon the pants in the same store months later.

I suddenly had this craving for Tokyo Milk Cheese Factory cookies. We first chanced upon their pop-up store at Greenbelt 5 late last year and instantly fell in love. The cookies--buttery soft with a light crunch and a rich and creamy filling sandwiched in between--are pure heaven. They remind me of a similar product from Pablo months prior.

Opened only after almost a year, this bottle of Christian Dior's Dior Homme Intense is finally on active rotation. I was saving it for the "cooler" months, so it was quite an exercise on self-restraint for me.
Packed in a sturdy and straightforward bottle, and with a distinctive black cylinder covering the pump's siphon, Dior Homme Intense is a warm and woodsy fragrance perfect for cooler temperatures. It's obvious from my other fragrance reviews and posts that I'm partial to warm scents, so me getting a bottle of this Dior creation is no surprise at all.

A plaid, or checkered shirt is always fun to wear. It hardly ever needs any styling because it already is your outfit's statement piece (although of course you can always insist on styling it). Oftentimes I simply pair one with the right pants and I'm good to go.

Why do people buy stuff that they don't use? I don't know because I, too, am guilty of that. Well, sort of. It's just that it takes me time to wear them, like these denim shorts from the Rafe x Bench collab of last year. They call them "Judo shorts" for some reason, and it comes with a denim belt.
Rafe Totengco's design goes against the usual fitted and tapered lot, sporting wider leg openings that spell comfort and ease. I've always been for slim silhouettes but every once in a while I do also go for loose-fitting clothes.
A brasserie is definitely French although it has of course already evolved the world over. Case in point: a Chinese brasserie, which TuanTuan touts itself as.
TuanTuan Chinese Brasserie offers Hong Kong comfort food in a French-inspired setting. Part of a restaurant chain, the Power Plant Mall restaurant in Rockwell is their fourth branch in the Philippines. I've first tried it in November last year and have been there at least two more times since.
Interiors and ambiance
The restaurant is designed as a single brightly lit space where everything and everyone are in full view all at once. That said, I wish the layout was thought out better, like maybe throw in a couple of partitions here and there. But hey, it serves its purpose as a place where people dine; just not ideal for dates and stuff.

Currently enjoying what little "cold" this tropical country is getting at the moment. Now while I would love to be pulling out jackets from my closet right now, I often still fall back to my lazy uniform of either a pullover or a sweater.
But I wore slippers to work. Dress slippers, I mean.
Friday, January 6, 2017
Yes, it's just mild because however I try to fool myself that it's sweater weather, it never really gets cold in this part of the world. Okay, unless you're in the highlands perhaps.
Sweaters and pullovers are my go-to pieces for the office whenever I'm too lazy to iron a shirt, my fallback, if you may. They're pretty basic but very versatile. Pullovers are very easy to dress up or down, too.
